Vijay Iyer is a jazz pianist/composer in the Monk/Andrew Hill tradition:  his ideas and compositions are the focus, not displays of technique.  And his trio is sterling.  Matana Roberts is a saxophonist as cerebral as Iyer is -- but with an earthier, more avant-gutbucket sound.  With two of the most interesting musicians in contemporary jazz on the same bill, this is something of a no-brainer.  

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT:  I've always found the Italianish food at Charlie Bird lightly overrated.  But plenty of people love it.  And there is nothing -- NOTHING -- bad to be said about their fabulous wine program.
