Pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen plays pieces by Clara Schumann, who we all know was one of the greatest piano virtuosi of her day, but whose great skills as a composer are only now coming to light. Rushdie also purports to celebrate Clara Schumann by commissioning new works by two male composers. It's hard to see how commissioning male composers celebrates a talented composer whose works were long overshadowed by those of the male composer she was married to (although Momen knows a lot more than most of us about the shadows of extremely famous male relatives) (famous mom, too). But you can't argue with new pieces by Vijay Iyer and Nico Muhly. And while I personally usually have no time for post-show talk-backs, the one tonight involves two of the very best composers in the country (female this time): Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Good food at good prices at Indie Food and Wine.
