I was just listening to the new album by Michael Formanek's Very Practical Trio — if bassist Formanek isn't enough for you, the other two members are guitarist supreme Mary Halvorson and the excellent sax player Tim Berne — and boy is it good.  By turns funky, melodic, angular — and the absence of a drummer sets these highly imaginative players free.
