Pianist/composer Jason Moran is about as good as mainstream contemporary jazz gets: forward-thinking but historically aware, keyed into current music outside his particular genre, a distinctive stylist both as a composer and as an improviser, a great conceptualist and also a great bandleader.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Brown Derby: pour 1-1/2 oz. Bourbon, 1 oz. grapefruit juice, and 1/2 oz. Honey Syrup into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
