OK, I'll admit it: usually I write this stuff and then factcheck, but this one I had to look up at the start. What's an octonaire? Who are Claude le Jeune and Pascal de l'Estocart? Even such a devotee of French Early Music as myself had absolutely no idea. Well, it turns out that octonaires are Calvanist chansons sprituelles from the late 16th Century (as they'd have to be), and le Jeune and de l'Estocart are masters of the genre. You KNOW that I, for one, will be logging on to learn more about this.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Nothing but Martinis this week: we need something STRONG. Pour 2 oz. Gin and 1 oz. dry Vermouth into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.
