You have TWO chances to hear live performances of Messiaen's Nativity organ phantasmagoria this week. (The other one is from St. Thomas on Saturday.) While St. John's organ isn't quite as magnificent as St. Thomas's (get your mind out of the gutter!), this recital has the advantage of adding Apparition du l'Elglise Éternelle to the program. (Please permit me to reiterate my skepticism, though, about listening to organ music through your computer, which can't conceivably do it justice. I myself will be listening to Olivier Latry on my stereo.) (And his organ, the [mostly] Cavaillé-Coll at Notre Dame in Paris, is the most magnificent of all.)

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: I'm still tempted to say Mushrooms. But barring that, let's try an Old Love: coat a chilled Old Fashioned glass with Absinthe. Pour 2 oz. Gin (I'd actually like to try Genever in this) and 1 oz. Suze, with 4 dashes of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into the chilled glass. Add ice. Garnish with a lemon twist.
