Speaking for myself, I don't much like previews of works-in-process where the artists present excerpts and talk about what they're hoping to do. I like to watch complete works, myself — and care a lot more what I think about a work than what its creators do. But if you feel differently, this two-part preview of a work composer Eve Beglarian is putting together with actor/writer Karen Kandel and director Mallory Catlett — three of this List's favorites, to be sure — is worth your attention. Vicksburg was, of course, the site of a crucial Civil War battle (siege, really); and this piece is going to examine that town through the eyes of women and gender-complex people, starting with the time of the Civil War and then resuming every 50 years thereafter.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Mississippi Cocktail: pour 2 oz. Cognac, 1 oz. each of Bourbon and dark Rum, and 1/2 oz. lemon juice, with 2 teaspoons of powdered sugar, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a Collins glass over ice. Garnish with an orange slice.
