Michael Brown is a throwback to 19th Century composer-pianists, in that he's a virtuoso pianist, as good as any professional, as well as an excellent composer (you could say the same thing about Thomas Adès, BTW). So it was exciting when it was announced that this duo recital with ace cellist Nicolas Canellakis would feature a world premiere of a new Brown piece. That Baruch's online description of the show fails to mention that piece means either that (a) Brown didn't finish it on time, or (b) Baruch doesn't want to scare off customers by admitting to them that there's New Music on the program. We can only hope it's the latter.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Good Northern Chinese food at Auntie Guan's Kitchen (but be warned: you have to search it out among the Cantonese and Sichuan standbys on the menu).
