Far be it from me to ask why a Tuesday Matinée would take place on a Wednesday night. Anyway, this isn't a live performance. But it is an example of another salutory trend that's popping up in remote musicmaking: this taped recital was directed by an actual stage director — a good one: James Darrah — so the visual component should be as arresting as the musical (and let's face it: the sound quality will be better). Gabriel Cabezas is an up-and-coming NYC cellist who, in terms of the quality of his playing (and programming), is there. He'll be playing music by such contemporary faves as Nico Muhly, Gabriella Smith, and Alyssa Weinberg. And, oh yeah, for a touch of transcendent sublimity, a Bach suite.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Roy Howard: pour 1/2 oz. Brandy, 1 oz. Lillet Blanc, 1/2 oz. orange juice, and 1 teaspoon Grenadine into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
