Luigi Rossi's early (1647) opera on the Orpheus myth gets its first New York staged performance ever. (Early opera composers couldn't keep their hands off the Orpheus myth.) (Matthew Aucoin presents a contemporary take at the MET later this month.) Juilliard's crack period-instruments ensemble is conducted by Avi Stein (whom I've heretofore known only as an [excellent] organist).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Baroque operas tend to be loooonnnngggggg — so don't think you're going to find anything open nearby in our still-bereft city. Beforehand, tide yourself over with a Cadillac burger at P.J. Clarke's.
