The MATA Festival programs a couple of weeks of solo World Premieres and recent pieces by paired composers. I don't know Maurizio Azzan's music — but I'm eager to remedy that. As for Yvette Janine Jackson, if any of my more um racially and gender privileged readers are tempted to view the recent efflorescence of programming of new work by Black and Latinx Women as tokenism, you only have to listen to a piece by a composer like Jackson to realize that, no, the problem is that such magnificent work was being held back wrongfully.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Gin and Mezcal: now there's a radical pairing. Ruby Diamond: pour 1.5 oz. Gin, 1 oz. Mezcal, 3/4 oz. each of Campari and lemon juice, and 1/4 oz. grapefruit juice, in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
