Composer Huang Ruo's music combines elements of Western avant-garde, Chinese traditional, jazz, and rock (not so much contemporary pop — but you can't have everything). Is it any wonder this List loves him? Jennifer Koh is, of course, one of the best violinists on the planet, one of the very few, not just who can, but who would, play the most exploratory new pieces with enormous sensitivity and then rip out a rousing (but still sensitive) rendition of (if she must) the Tchaikovsky concerto. This is the world premiere of a solo violin piece, dealing with the Pandemic (cuz how could it not?), that Ruo wrote for Koh.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A New Hope: pour 3/4 oz. each of aged Rum and Old Tom Gin, 1/2 oz. Bénédictine, 3/4 oz. lime juice, and 1/4 oz. Maple Syrup, with 1 dash of Angostura bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with some grated nutmeg.
