I don't know that I'd call this music "cutting edge", exactly. But I, for one, am crazy about the trombone, which of all instruments most closely approximates the affect of the human voice. The assembled trombonists include the Phil's Joseph Alessi, whom this List hereby nominates one of the best instrumentalists on the planet!

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Mae West: pour 2 oz. Cognac and 1/2 oz. each of lime juice and Grenadine into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with an orange twist.
