Two artists, becoming aware of their own privilege in a reforming world, try to craft the perfect apology. Since the title comes from Castiglione's term, in his Book of the Courtier (if you haven't read it: READ IT), for "a form of defensive irony: the ability to disguise what one really desires, feels, thinks, and means or intends behind a mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance", one might of course queston their good faith (like that of all privileged apologists).

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Contessa: pour 1 oz. each of Gin, dry Vermouth, and Aperol into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake (you'd think you'd stir this, but you shake it). Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over ice. Express a lemon twist into the cocktail and then discard the rind.
