As you all know by now, this List thinks vibraphonist Joel Ross is one of the absolute best mainstream jazz musicians of the upcoming generation. Tonight he plays tribute to one of the best jazz musicians — fuck that, best musicians period — ever, Ornette Coleman. With a quartet including fellow best-of-upcoming-generation player Immanuel Wilkins on Ornette's horn, the alto.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: If you go to the venue, it'll be nice to walk around the corner to the welcoming and delicious Kind of Soul. At home, I was surprised (and disappointed) to learn that there does not appear to be a cocktail named for Lonely Woman, a composition that calls for one if any does. So I made one up (again, I'm still adjusting the proportions — input welcome) (experienced cocktailians will see what I'm doing here): pour 1-1/2 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. lemon juice, and 1/4 oz. each of Grenadine and Crème de Violette, with 1 dash of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
