A video version of Julia Wolfe's oratorio taking off from the hundreds of versions of the "John Henry" ballad: another great example of Wolfe's use of the vernacular to make contemporary classical that is not so much visceral as that it punches you in the gut.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Sledge Hammer: pour 1/2 oz. each light Rum, Cognac, and Calvados, with 1/4 teaspoon Absinthe or Pastis, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
