The first of two programs (the next airs next Wednesday) in which this vibrant string quartet plays music by women composers written over nearly a millenium. And what composers! Here, we have a piece by Hildegard von Bingen, one of the most distinctive and compelling — I'm biting my tongue at "weird" —identifiable composers of the medieval period. And a new piece by the classically-trained folky Rhiannon Giddens, which should be interesting. Capping it off is the Aizuri's Greatest Hit, Gabriella Smith's Carrot Revolution: a piece to make you love (and I mean LOVE) contemporary classical. Just listen.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: If we're listening to the Abbess HIldegard, we've got be drinking Bénédictine, right? Bénédictine Sour: pour 2 oz. Bourbon, 3/4 oz. Bénédictine, 1 oz. lemon juice, and 1/4 oz. Simple Syrup into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with 3 thin lemon wheels.
