Jack DeJohnette is one of the great drummers in all Jazz history: of that there’s no doubt. Celebrating his birthday are a quartet led by him (and featuring no less than Don Byron on reeds!!!!); the Zig Zag Power Trio (which features the great Vernon Reid on guitar and a fabulous rhythm section comprising Melvin Gibbs — I’ve lately come to think he’s the best electric bassist now playing — and Reid’s old bandmate Will Calhoun), and a bunch of musicians associated with Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab (a venue that changed my life — but we can talk about that some other time).
