Flautist Anthony Trionfo offers a brand new work by Katherine Balch, who cares more about exquisite textures than seemingly anything else — and makes it work. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the rest of the program comprises Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Harp, and Viola — which actually might be the single best chamber work of the 20th Century (with some exquisite textures of its own) — and Prokofiev’s delightful neoclassical Flute Sonata, which has found more fame in his adaptation of it for violin, although the original is still the greatest.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Keep up the exquisiteness with the exquisite Shanghainese at Little Alley.
