Dawn Upshaw, whose soprano tone is still sweet, sings Renaissance and early Baroque English songs — an incredibly fertile repertoire — and the Brentano quartet does string quartet arrangements of English viol consorts (another fertile repertoire). It all leads up to Purcell’s ineffable “Dido’s Lament” (up there with “Waterloo Sunset” as the most beautiful song in English) and then Melissa Wagner’s new reinterpretation of the Dido story.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, fun South African wine and food at Kaia. Streaming at home, not to rub Dido’s face in it, but have a Rome with a View: pour 1 oz. each of Campari, dry Vermouth, and lime juice, and 3/4 oz. Simple Syrup, into a Collins glass over ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with an orange slice.
