What made Grouper’s music so fascinating is the way she melded folkie singer-songwriter with ambient distorted noise: sort of like Judee Sill (without the Jesus) (and the heroin) produced by The Jesus and Mary Chain (but real). On her most recent album, she splits them up, some tracks being acoustic songs and some being pretty pure noise. I’m not sure that’s a gain — although I like the noisey ones.
