C.P.E. Bach is often called a bridge from the Baroque to the Classical, but that isn’t really true. Emanuel Bach’s music is crazed, with sharp angles veering off in all sorts of unexpected directions: he’s more a bridge from the Baroque to Chopin. Emanuel Bach’s keyboard music can sound well on the piano rather than the harpsichord for which it was written — provided the player is rhythmically incisive enough. Einav Yarden’s recent album of this music suggests she is. Also on the bill are some pieces by Emanuel’s dad, whom he evidently revered but against whom he clearly rebelled, musically.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: As you may recall, the revivified Old John’s Luncheonette is right across the street.
