Edmund Cienek has all the hallmarks of a William Bolcom student: the wit, the melodiousness, the affection for outdated forms of pop and theater music. Frankly, we could use more stuff like that. This opera turns problematical Captivity Narratives on their heads: the problems of the White woman kidnapped by Indigenes only begin when she’s returned to White society.
