You have definitely heard Son Jarocho from Veracruz, a vivacious coastal music that combines elements of the Spanish Baroque, Mexican Indigenous, and — to me this is surprising, as Veracruz is on the Gulf coast rather than the Atlantic, but what do I know — West African music brought in by kidnapped slaves. It’s that lively harp-driven Mexican music: you totally know it (if nothing else, certainly you’ve heard “La Bomba”). And if it doesn’t make you smile (you can’t dance in the formal rooms of the Americas Society), I don’t know what’s up.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: There used to be a Veracruzan seafood restaurant within walking distance of the Americas Society — but that was then. Wonder if Maya is still good?
