The opera I ever saw by Daniel Catán was Rappaccini’s Daughter at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I was surprised. Here was this contemporary composer (he had just recently died) who wrote beautifully in a gorgeous Common-Practice ideom that could be appreciated by just about anyone and who was, moreover, one of those born opera composers, able to use music to express things in an unhackeyed way and also able to keep things moving. And then I saw this magical work. People are going to be surprised at how much they end up enjoying this Magical Realist opera. And this is one piece that will benefit from a well-funded Met production — and Mary Zimmerman is just the director to helm it.
