A performance of Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps, one of the best pieces of Western chamber music written in the last century — maybe the best. A piece so moving, so utterly affecting, so shot full of mystery that even people who think they don’t like new music (and this piece is so new it was written in a Nazi P.O.W. camp 80 years ago) surprise themselves by loving it.
