So mezzo-soprano Kayleigh Butcher emailed me to say that she has just been asked to step in at the last minute to sing Schoenberg’s Das Buch Der Hängenden Gärten. There’s a reason that one of us is an amazing performer of music and the other a middling writer about it. If you don’t know that piece, it’s Schoenberg in his pre-dodecaphonic (but still atonal), purely (and hyper!) Expressionist period. There’s also some rare chamber music by Berg (Schoenberg’s pupil duh), brief pieces by Schoenberg’s dodecaphonic heir Babbitt (he cared if you listened!), and a film-with-music by ensemble member Christopher Bailey.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It’s becoming clear that Lady Gaga can do just about anything (not that, say, outsinging Mick Jagger is much of an achievement these days) — and that includes having a trattoria named after her by her parents.
