It is so great that there is now this crop of vibraphonists who are totally devoted not just to technical accomplishment (i.e., they don’t feel the need to always be playing fast) but to expanding the sonic palette of their instrument and developing their own compositional as well as improvisatory sophistication. Patricia Brennan is at the center of all this. You can only be excited to hear the new piece she’s developed for herself and Sylvie Courvoisier, a pianist with crystaline fingers and mind.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, eclectic New American at As You Are. At home, have a Paloma: using a lime wedge to wet it, rim a Collins glass with salt. Fill with ice. Pour in 2 oz. Blanco or Reposado Tequila and 1/2 oz. lime juice. Top with grapefruit soda.
