See the blurb below for Sunday afternoon’s Tiburtina Ensemble concert for a paean to Hildegard von Bingen, one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition. In these shows, Flatbush’s own Medieval Ensemble Alkemie presents a program situating the polymathic saint’s music within her apothecary practice. Saturday’s show is free. Sunday’s isn’t — but it’s in the more congenial confines of the Owl Music Parlor and includes an opening set by Jim Hopkins and Alyssa Weathersby mixing 20th Century songs for voice and piano with songs by the excellent Baroque composer Barbara Strozzi (wonder why she had to be “rediscovered”) reimagined for voice and electronics (just what this List loves).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person on Saturday, Detroit style pizza at Emmy Squared. Streaming at home, have an Abbey: pour 1 oz. Gin and 3/4 oz. each of Lilet Blanc and orange juice, with 2 dashes of orange bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a cocktail cherry. Sunday, winning neighborhood Roman at Camillo.
