John Bernd was an emerging dancer/choreographer lost to AIDS in the 1980s. In 2016, Ishmael Houston-Jones (who danced with Bernd) and Miguel Gutierrez (then an up-and-comer, now a choreographic star) joined to create a tribute to Bernd, incorporating several of his pieces (with supplementary materials — just as Nick Hallett’s score incorporates the music originally set by Bernd with new material). This was a big deal in 2016, and it should be a big deal now.
