Yeah it’s getting boring that mainstream classical music struggles to be perceived as “relevant” not aesthetically but sociopolitically (in this List’s view a mug’s game). But a multimedia vocal/instrumental piece by Julia Wolfe about impending ecological disaster doesn’t seem boring at all. The opener, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto (the Phil’s own Frank Huang, soloist) — a terrific piece — is mainly relevant if you’re a dancing polar bear.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: You can just make it to Kwame Onwuachi’s in-house Afro-Caribbean smash Tatiana (not to be confused with the one in Brighton Beach) for dinner after the Thursday show (whether you can get in is another question entirely). Friday and Saturday, astronomically priced but quite delicious Old Skool fancy Italian at The Leopard at Des Artistes.
