Sokio, who has the Latin-American knack of not acknowledging any meaningful generic distinction between classical and vernacular music (meaning his pop music is informed by classical and his classical is informed by pop), returns to opera after a long hiatus from the the form. This piece explores the political and economic factors that govern who gets to immigrate from Mexico, through the story of a mother and child from Puebla. That the instrumental ensemble includes bassist Brandon Lopez and percussionist Shayna Dunkelman should tip you off to the nature and quality of this enterprise.
