I’m sure you all care, but Marisa Monte’s 1994 Rose and Charcoal may be my single favorite Brazilian pop album. The lilting rhythms, the indelible melodies — all toughened by a clear conversance with the avant-garde (Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson participate). I was worried she wasn’t going to be good any more — you know how it is with pop musicians — but her last album (her first in 10 years) put that worry to bed.
