Even if you don’t know pianist/composer James Carney — and he’s way underrecognized — when you see his quartet is rounded out by trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist Marc Helias, and drummer Tom Rainey (the cream of New York jazz players), you figure he’s up to something. Martina Liviera, meanwhile, is just the kind of mildly off-center artist the Owl specializes in: a Buenos Aires-in-New York who leavens the music of her home continent with lots of jazz and some classical.
