Merce Cunningham’s Beach Birds performed, for the first time ever, on an actual beach! With a response choreographed by Sarah Michelson, who is sort of paradigmatic of the approach this List favors: never putting things on a plate in front of you and telling you what to think or feel, but rather giving you a set of inputs and letting you make of them what you will (she will never ever explicate her work). (Yvonne Rainer has said she’s renounced her No Manifesto, but I still believe in most of it.) (Leave me my camp, though!) No wonder Michelson was chosen to respond to her former boss! It’s hard for me to imagine anyone who reads this List and is around this weekend skipping this (unless they’re going to the Roulette show in Bryant Park).
