Wadada Leo Smith, a crucial contemporary American musician, presents a long-form (real long-form: this is the last of four different nights) piece commemorating various figures in the Civil Rights movement. String quartet, avant-jazz ensemble (all-star ensembles all of them): Smith will employ — and is master of — them all. And of course he’ll play his unforgettable trumpet.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Lahori Chilli is worth the stroll for its excellent Pakistani food (and it’s open 24 hours, so you don’t have to rush). Their Beef Nihari is a stew virtually unique in New York — and quite delicious.
