The extraordinary Laura Ortman (with a libretto by the extraordinary Autumn Chacon) recasts the Southwestern/Latin American legend of La Llorona — a woman who drowns children and then cries in mourning — as a story of a contemporary woman’s attempt, after having submerged herself in La Llorona’s watery realm, to avoid following La Llorona’s destructive path. (This was originally supposed to be performed outside, by the water — but not this week!)
