Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker was one of those artists back in the ‘80s (the ‘70s if you’re Julius Eastman) who showed that Minimalism could be emotionally blunt instead of abstracted. She’s lately shown a particular affinity for Bach, another artist who showed that the strictest structural formalism could be a vehicle for searing expressive intensity. It’s hard for us to hear Bach that way now — which makes de Keersmaeker’s contributions all the more worthy. (I hope she’ll do some Cantatas in the future.)
