Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Piano with Javanese Gamelan is one persuasive and hugely enjoyable application of Gamelan to Western classical usages — or is it the other way around? The piano is played by Adam Tendler, and the gamelan by Son of Lion. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is about as good as plain European music gets. And Mahler’s ”Blumine” movement (excised from Mahler’s First Symphony) about as “exotic” (but by a chamber orchestra???????).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Annual Game Festival at Henry’s End (if you forgo the turtle soup you’ll be very sorry).
