Contemporaneous is understandably pushing the world premiere on this program of an orchestral song cycle by Lila Meretzky setting the Yiddish poetry of Anna Margolin (and sung, no less, by Lucy Dhegrae and Milena Gligić). But it’s hard not to also get excited by a piece extracted as a standalone from one of his epic works-in-progress by Dylan Mattingly, who has to be the most fun Maximalist around. Not to mention something by Shelley Washington.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, eclectic New American at As You Are. Streaming at home, have an 8 Amaro Sazerac (created by subscriber MS!!!!): rinse a chilled Old Fashioned glass with green Chartreuse. Pour 1/4 oz. each of 1⁄4 oz Amaro Meletti, Aperol, Amaro dell’Erborista, Ramazzotti, Campari, Amaro Sibilla, CioCiaro, and Amaro Montenegro, with 4 dashes Peychaud’s bitters and 2 dashes Bitterman’s Orange Citrate Cream, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into the rinsed glass. (FREE OFFER: I will make this cocktail for any subscriber who can discern the reasoning behind its recommendation to accompany this concert.)
