When you have a personal fave composer as freakishly prolific as Martinů, it’s not surprising when works pop up that haven’t heard yet. But I’d never even suspected he had composed a Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, String Quartet, and Piano — and here it is. And the rest of the program is so enticing: Nadine Sierra (no less) singing the lovely “Aria” from Villa-Lobos’s cello-laden Bachianas Brasilieiros No. 5; some more instrumental Villa-Lobos (some quite obscure) (here’s another very prolific composer!); some instrumental arrangements of Gesualdo’s weird Renaissance-into-Baroque vocal music (FUN FACT: while the composer Gesualdo was a murderer, his 20th Century successor as Prince of Venosa was a legendary winemaker whose famous quirks nevertheless stopped well short of homicide); and Stravinsky’s pungent Neoclassical Octet for Wind Instruments (‘nuff said).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Burger Joint.
