This List has already advised readers to grab every chance they can to hear the work of Julia Perry — and here’s a whole festival. Her work is now being resuscitated for all the right reasons, but you can’t really say (as I have in the past) that she’s been underplayed for the all the wrong reasons. Because putting Perry’s race and sex aside, how many composers of her American Neoclassical-into-Modernist generation are played much any more? Whatever the reason for Perry’s previous neglect, the music is marvelous, retaining a wonderful sprightliness throughout the composer’s stylistic evolution. Recommended with tremendous enthusiasm.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: From LPR, go to The Commerce Inn for stick-to-your-ribs Shaker-inspired cooking. From the Tishman Auditorium, Northern Chinese at Auntie Guan’s Kitchen 108. From the DiMenna Center, solid Italian from the oven at Ci Siamo. From Alice Tully Hall, scrumptious Indian kebabs at Kebab Aur Sherab.
