This is an enticing program, even by the incredibly high standards of the International Contemporary Ensemble. The two composers involved break, or rather disregard, or rather obviate, genre barriers, Anthony Davis being a jazz-identified artist who composes music that is clearly categorizable (if you’re inclined to categorize) as “classical”; Leila Adu-Gilmore being a classical composer who also does Pop-Jazz (and did Punk/Electronica). The Davis pieces being performed tonight include ones incorporating Gamelan, as well as a part of his score for a dance piece from the 1980s that still remains memorable, incorporating West African rhythmic usages. Adu-Gilmore will handle the vocals in a major new vocal/instrumental piece she composed for this show.
