Chou Wen-Chung was a great composer. He composed music deeply informed by Chinese scales and techniques for Western instruments. But it doesn’t come across as any kind of contrived “fusion”: it sounds like music as Chou heard it. And it’s endlessly compelling, even gorgeous. It’s only fitting for the University where Chou taught for so long (and so influentially) to pay him this tribute.
