Pity the poor student baritone who has to essay the anchor work on this program, Maxwell Davies’s avant-epic Eight Songs for a Mad King (a piece you will NOT forget). Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon is an apt pairing. Taking a different tact to harrowing material, Saariaho’s From the Grammar of Dreams is utterly beguiling.
