The violinist Sami Abu Shumays puts down his violin to sing music associated with the Egyptian music icon Umm Kulthum, surely the greatest singer of Arabic music in the age of recordings, indeed one of the greatest singers in the world, a vocal/musical phenomenon. To put this in context, this is something like “Captain Kirk Douglas Sings Aretha”. Hope Shumays knows what he’s doing. Meanwhile, we look forward to “Emmanuel Ax Sings Callas”.
