Let’s set the Wayback Machine to the 1950s, when there really WAS a split between Uptown and Downtown in New Music. Ultimately — and happily for the kind of people who read this List — Downtown (exemplified by the New York School) won. And tonight we celebrate the 90th Birthday of the New York School’s only surviving constituent, Christian Wolff. He’s still active: he has a world premiere on this program. The rest will be a retrospective played by a star-studded (for this kind of music) assemblage including people like String Noise, Ikue Mori, John King, and David Behrman(!). As for the music, it’s New York School: conceptually complex, structurally minimalist, and always surprising.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: As late as this concert goes, La Lanterna di Vittorio will still be doling out lasagna afterwards.
