Carnegie Hall is pitching its Weimar Republic series as a study of a democracy on the precipice of Fascism. But to shallow aesthetes like Your Compiler, it’s a chance to hear pieces from one of our very favorite periods of European Art Music: the 1920s. So tonight Ensemble Connect gives us Berg’s Lyric Suite, Second Viennese School that’s almost popular; Weill’s String Quartet, a rewarding student piece that doesn’t sound much like the Weill we all love; Schulhoff’s Concertino for Flute, Viola, and Double Bass, Neo-Classicism tinged with Expressionist Late Romanticism; and Gershwin’s Lullaby. LOVE this stuff (even if we’re going to hell in a handbasket).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Burger Joint.
