This show is so much to my taste that I'm almost wary of recommending it to others. Modern and post-modern songs. Ligeti! Messiaen! Cage! Webern! Lutoslawski! Sun Ra!!!!!!!! A clutch of gamelan-influenced songs by Seattle composer Jarrad Powell (wonder how they'll compare to those done by Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett at LPR last month?). Makes you want to rethink your presuppositions about Brigham Young University, where these twoperformers teach or studied.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Thailand isn't actually that close to Indonesia (where gamelan comes from). But it's a lot closer to it than, say, Brooklyn is. So, Samui.
