A nice program from Brooklyn's own progressive chamber orchestra.  The piece to get most excited about is Anna Clyne's beautiful and moving Within Her Arms, written in memory of the composer's mother:  sort of a modern-day Tallis Fantasia (which is really about as high praise for a piece for string orchestra as I can imagine).  Janáček's Idyll for Strings is another beautiful, melancholy string piece:  an early work that perhaps sounds more like Dvorák than Janáček, but none the worse for that.  Livelier will be arrangements for strings of some of Komitas's delightful Armenian folk song arrangements.  Lively but perhaps questionable will be some new arrangements of Brahms's Hungarian Dances (which for me at least tend to cloy in orchestral guise).

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT:  Bar Pleiades for excellent cocktails and very good bar food.
